Rita Sherlock et al - August 1983 (audio)

Welcome to Jerry’s Story. This is Steve Sherlock. I am the first of the 6 children Gerald and Rita Sherlock brought into this world. 

This podcast episode shares some original oral history recorded in August of 1983 by Helen Geoffroy and made available by her son Eric.  Helen was one of the younger sisters of Rita. Rita was the oldest of 10.

Helen apparently visited Rita with Mémère and recorded this conversation. Patty is also a part of the discussion. 

Mémère (Ernestine Joyal) was the mother of both Rita and Helene. Patty is the youngest of the 6 “Sherlock kids”.

Frank Moody comes in for a visit. 

Rita left us all in November 1983, Mémère in December of the same year but both voices sound vibrant in this recording.

My special thanks to cousin Eric for allowing me to share this recording and to my brother Bob for instigating the search for it.

10 year anniversary

10 years ago - yes, hard to believe but the calendar is relentless.

Digging into some of the photo archives (yes, about time) from the containers in Dad's place. Some of the more relevant ones can be shared here. Others will be shared in other ways with family.

Belated birthday wishes Dad

Late to this: Jerry's birthday came and went a couple of days ago. 

Over 7 years have past since he left us and yet I still turn to make a note to tell him something. And realize it will be via the spiritual route, not in real life.

Dolores and I made a visit last weekend to Mom and Dad's grave site.  I cleaned away some of the weeds from the bronze plaque.

For those who couldn't be in Pawtucket to make a visit to Jerry and Rita, here is a brief video captured Saturday morning Feb 20, 2016 in the cold, breezy quiet by their gravesite.

While the Notre Dame cemetery was closed when I tried to visit on the 19th, I managed to get there during open hours on Saturday.





If you look carefully, do you see the angel sitting on their stone?

I have started going through the archive of photos that Jerry had in his possession. I have found quite a few gems thus far and am sure to find some more.

One can see why Jerry was attracted by Rita:

One of the side benefits of clearing the bookshelf to paint the study is the opportunity to discover some envelopes of pictures that had previously just been collecting dust, almost forgotten.

Well, now a few of these pictures can see the light of day.

Oh, my! Yes, that is I in the center with Mom to my right (your left) and Dad to my left (your right).

Mother had one wish for my graduation. She wished that the beard that I had grown for the production of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I that we did on campus, and the beard that I subsequently grew quite fond of, would be shaved off for graduation.

Mother did get her wish.

I grew it back shortly after and it has been part of me ever since. Even my wife and kids have only seen pictures like this of the before-beard days. And now you can say that you have also!

Go North on RT 104 from St Michael's to RT 116 (about 2 miles)
Follow RT 116 to end at RT 122 (about 8 miles)
Turn right, heading south on RT 122 until Broad St, bear left (about 2 miles)
- Note if you see Ann & Hope, you missed the turn

Follow Broad St to RT 123, turn left heading East (about 0.8 miles)
Follow RT 123 to reservoir and take immediate right
- Note if you go up the hill to the "Welcome to MA" sign you missed the turn

This is Colwell St in Cumberland which turns into Mendon Rd in Attleboro.
About 1 mile down the road on the left you'll see a brick and iron work fence around an entrance to the SandCastle Adult Community.

Turn left and bear to the left to arrive directly at the hall. Yes, the building looks like a "castle".
