twenty questions
One thing I know to be true
Before cleaning the floor it is
Better to complete dusting the table
How many food courses will be
Served determines the need for
Silverware when setting the table
Her twenty questions were expected
The best poker hand was no match
When Helene was holding the table
It was hard to be patient when
He wanted desert before the
Dinner dishes had cleared the table
Don’t kick, be gentle, get
Help, many hands make
Light work folding the table
Sadness hangs like wet laundry
In the living room where there
Would be conversation leaving the table

Albert wrote "the few, the proud, the family" as he sent out this photo from the Joyal Brouillard Brunch which was held this past Sunday at The Pines in North Smithfield.

Cousin Elaine sends this along that had been typed by her mother (Pauline) and that still hangs on her own refrigerator as a constant reminder.

Who's in the pool?
No, I am not talking about the pool for the current NCAA March Madness.
Some of the Joyal clans gathered at the Barrette's pool in the 1970's.

Who is in the pool?
If you have any ideas or guesses, you can either comment or send an email to me at

Thanks to my sister Joan for making this image available. There are a bunch of photos that she has taken the time to convert to a digital format so we will be able to share this history.

Dock at the lake
Lest there be any doubt about the dock and the boat 'house' at the lake, here is a photo from the archives that shows both.
Jerry was watching Steve playing at the water's edge.

Brunch Photos
Hard to believe two week have already gone by since the Brouillards and Joyals got together.

Jerry had a good day. It has become a 'peak' day. Albert is keeping everyone he can updated on all fronts.

What does Albert do when not sending emails or spending time posing for or taking pictures?

Inciting others to do so! :-)

Brunch at Fish Tale
After a real meal meal and conversation at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale Restaurant in Westbrook, CT we stopped for a walk along the breakwater.
You can share what we saw
As you can hear, the wind was strong and covered up most of what Ray, AL and I said.

Joyal Brouillard Brunch
The Joyals and Brouillards have combined to meet for brunch once a month as opposed to meeting separately. A smaller group than anticipated appeared at the Village Haven in North Smithfield.
The waitress took our group picture with Al's camera:
Next month we are scheduled to go to Wright's Farm (9/11/11)

Joyal Brunch: Pig Roast
Michelle and family celebrated Jonathan's graduation with a pig roast and included the Joyal Brunch. A pig roast? Yup! Here is the full pig!

Cooked 7 hours at 325, the pig was very nicely done.

It came apart easily to make some delicious pulled pork!

If you'd like to have your own pig roast, you can contact Dave.

Joyal Brunch
First Sunday of the month and the Joyal Brunch was held at the Wright's Farm in Harrisville, RI. Long known for it's family style chicken dinners, the restaurant was in full operation on Sunday.
We arrived just as it opened and we seated quickly. As we left, the waiting area was full with more arriving. They are quite efficient so I don't believe the wait was long. The food and value is well worth the wait!
A change since the last time we were there. The paper cup ice cream dessert has now been replaced by a chicken logo'd slice of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Cute idea!
On the family update front:
Albert is scheduled for a triple by-pass on Friday March 12th. Your prayers will be welcomed.
Jerry is scheduled to talk about his experiences in the Pacific Theater during WWII at the VA Home in Bristol, RI on the March 25th. With a little luck , the talk will be broadcast via the internet and available here both live and then in a recorded version.

Story of Taps
There was a printed handout available at the Jean H Joyal ceremony on 6/6/09 with the story of the origination of Taps. While the printout was a compelling read, according to the West Point web site, the more accurate version of the story can be found here.
It must be pointed out that other stories of the origin of Taps exist. A popular one is that of a Northern boy who was killed fighting for the south. His father, Robert Ellicombe a Captain in the Union Army, came upon his son's body on the battlefield and found the notes to Taps in a pocket of the dead boy's Confederate uniform. When Union General Daniel Sickles heard the story, he had the notes sounded at the boy's funeral. There is no evidence to back up the story or the existence of Captain Ellicombe. As with many other customs, this solemn tradition continues today. Although Butterfield merely revised an earlier bugle call, his role in producing those 24 notes gives him a place in the history of music as well as the history of war.Read the full story of the origin of Taps here.

This audio recording will replay the ceremony almost in its entirety. I say almost as there was about 3 minutes edited out from the recording. This was the period when the Veteran Honor Guard had taken down the town flag and were folding it according to military protocol before passing it to the First Selectman, Noel Bishop.
Master of Ceremonies was Ken McCarthy
The Blessing was given by Pastor Reverend John W Wilson

A couple of notes on the recording:
- This ceremony did take place on the green in Westbrook, CT. Some traffic sounds will appear in the background.
- The ceremony started at 10:00 AM and during the flag ceremony, you will hear the local church bells ring ten times.
- There is also a persistent minor clanking At first I wasn't sure where the clanking came from. Then as I listened to this again I found that the sound stopped when the flag ceremony began. I realize that the clanking was from the flag rope and connectors flapping against the pole in the gentle morning breeze.
