RIP: Angela M. (Sherlock) Brousseau

Angela M. (Sherlock) Brousseau, 99, of Snug Harbor died November 2, 2020. She was the wife of the late Paul J. Brousseau.

Born in Pawtucket, to the late John F. and Mary (King) Sherlock, she lived in South Kingstown for 58 years. After raising her children Angela returned to the University of Rhode Island where she received her BS in Home Economics in 1971. She then taught in the Warwick Public School system for over 12 years retiring in June 1984.

Angela was a member of the National and Rhode Island Home Economics Associations, and RI Retired Teachers Association. She was a long-time member of the Snug Harbor East Matunuck Civic Association (SHEMCA) serving several terms as President, and a member of the Snug Harbor Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to travel, was an avid downhill and cross country skier and was a member of the Seagals Golf League and the Warwick Recreational Golf League. Angela also served her church, Saint Francis of Assisi in Wakefield as a member of its Finance Committee and the Saint Francis Renovation Fund.

She leaves five daughters, Paula B. Powell of Sterling, VA, Michelle Brousseau of South Kingstown, RI, Risa M. Mancillas of Carver, MA, Noelle K. Brousseau of South Kingstown, RI, and Justine H. Brousseau of Plymouth, MA; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Goulet of North Providence, RI, Allison Powell-Switaj of Annandale, VA, Jason Mancillas of Carver, MA, Alexandra J. Cavallaro of Redlands, CA, Melissa R. Kershner of Rochester, WA, Robert P. Cavallaro of Dedham, MA and Guliana B. Signorelli of South Kingstown, RI, and eight great grandchildren, Connor, Noah and Aidan Goulet, Zoe and Benton Powell-Switaj, Kaden and Jack Mancillas, and Gabrielle Kershner; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late William E. Brousseau, and the sister of the late Mary Frances Campbell, Martina Higgins, Helene Mainer, John, Edward, Gerald, Henry and Paul Sherlock.

Burial will be at Saint Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Due to COVID-19 concerns the burial will be private.

RIP: Lisa B Sherlock

Lisa B. Sherlock (nee Brown), 63, of Deer Park, passed away on August 6, 2018. The daughter of the late Earl L. and Yvette Brown, Lisa was the loving wife of Bob Sherlock for 37 years; beloved mother of Will (Kristen) Sherlock and Meghan (Florentino) Sherlock Salazar; sister of Earl (Kathleen) Brown, Alan Brown, Julie (Bruce) Rioux and Eugene Brown; aunt and cousin of many.

Born and raised in Fort Kent, Maine, Lisa received her BA in speech pathology from the University of Maine. After marrying Bob, she moved with him around the U.S. before settling in the Barrington area in 1995. She worked at Barrington High School as a tech/media specialist and before that as a special services aide.

Lisa would want to be remembered for bringing joy to those around her. She loved to get people laughing with her. She was a doer and orchestrator with smarts, energy, creativity, and organizational skills. She loved being a mom and was great at it. From little childhood scrapes to her kids’ biggest moments, she was always there, loving her family more than anything. She also held a tender place in her big heart for the kids of the Barrington area, encouraging and guiding the pre-teens and teenagers she met at school and in the community.

Visitation for Lisa will be held on Thursday, August 9, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington, IL. On Friday, August 10, visitation will continue at 9:00am until the time of her Mass at 10:00am at Saint Anne Catholic Community, 120 N. Ela St., Barrington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sweetser, www.sweetser.org/makeagift.php. Interment will take place at a later date in Fort Kent, Maine.

RIP - SHERLOCK, TIMOTHY P

SHERLOCK, TIMOTHY P. age 57, of Aberdeen Avenue, Warwick, died on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. Born in Providence, a son of the late Paul V. and Ann E. (Devine) Sherlock, he lived in Warwick for most of his life. He attended public schools and was the valedictorian of the Lakewood School class of 1978. 

Tim began his work at the East Greenwich Housing Authority and the Recreation Department. He was later employed at Shaw's Market in Garden City, Cranston, for many years. When not working in the community, he worked at the Trudeau Center sheltered workshop in Warwick. 

He enjoyed drumming, singing, dancing, and many recreational sports, and participated numerous times in the RI Special Olympics. He also participated in the Special Olympics International Games in Brockport, NY, South Bend, IN, and Salzburg, Austria. For the Notre Dame games, he was a featured athlete on Wide World of Sports. 

He is survived by his girlfriend, Marian Maloney; his siblings, Kathleen A. Sherlock MacLean and Douglas, Martin D. Sherlock and Jodi, and Mary E. Sherlock and Lissa DiMauro; his nephews and niece, Cameron Simpson, Patrick Sherlock, Elizabeth Sherlock, Malcolm MacLean, Duncan MacLean, and Graham MacLean; four aunts, Angela Brousseau, Helene Mainor, Lucille Sherlock, and Janet Devine; and many cousins. He was the brother of the late Patrick J. Sherlock. 

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 9, from 4-7 p.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. 

A committal service will be held on Wednesday, December 10, at a time to be announced, in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter. (Please gather just inside the cemetery entrance.)

RIP - SHERLOCK, HENRY J.

SHERLOCK, HENRY J., 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home in Providence. He was married to Lucille (Bilodeau) Sherlock for 56 years. Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late John F. and Mary (King) Sherlock. 

After graduating from St. Raphael Academy and completing his service in the U.S. Navy, he enrolled at Providence College and graduated in 1950. It was that year that Henry began what turned out to be a 63 year working career starting as a reporter for the Pawtucket Times where he worked for 12 years. He then became assistant to the director of the RI Department of Public Works and held that position for six years. 

The following three years were spent in PR work for two prominent advertising and public relations agencies before starting his own firm in 1972. Four years later he became Executive Director of Construction Industries of Rhode Island, a position he held for 37 years until retiring last December at age 87. He continued as a consultant to CIRI. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Susan Shedd and her husband Daniel of North Reading, MA, Peter Sherlock and his wife Mary of Sudbury, MA, Alan Sherlock and his wife Jennifer of Colorado Springs, CO and Julie Sherlock and her husband Stephen Hurrell of Westerly. 

He is also survived by two sisters: Angela Brousseau of South Kingstown and Helene Mainor of North Kingstown. He leaves 9 grandchildren and 45 nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Frances Campbell, Martina Higgins, John, Edward, Gerald and Paul Sherlock.

Christine Sherlock, 64, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary (McNamara) Sherlock. Christine enjoyed spending time at home and painting. She leaves a sister, Mary Sherlock of Pawtucket. She was the sister of the late Karen Sherlock.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from CHEETHAM Funeral Home, 1012 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford. Interment will follow at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery. VISITATION will be Monday 4 to 7 p.m.

Sherlock Thanksgiving 2012

Mom and Dad were watching over us as we continued the tradition of gathering on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Over the years, as each of the siblings got married, the question of where to go for the holidays came up. We decided to go to the other side on the day and to have the Sherlock's gather on the Friday after for Thanksgiving and some convenient day after Christmas.

Using Google Hangout Franklin connected with other members in NJ and IL. This may be a new addition to the evolving tradition!

Celia continued one other prime tradition by making cheesecake using Dad's recipe. Dad's recipe it turns out was the one Mom used but really originated with Lillian Canton. So the more correct term should be Lillian's Recipe. In any case, Ceclia did a great job. Dad (Papa) would have had a couple of pieces for sure!

Looking back

67 years ago, Jerry landed on the black sands beach at Iwo Jima and 36 days later was lucky to walk off. As the oldest of his six children, I have long felt that this Sherlock 'luck" has played a great deal in the cards of life. We have all been so fortunate. Jerry and Rita were a special couple. Rita left us a while ago. It seems like Jerry will be re-united with her soon.

Coincidence? Garnet Rogers "Seeds of Hope" is playing as I struggle to write this

We'll harvest seeds of hope we've sown

Jerry barely opened his eyes when I visited on Saturday. I held his hand and felt his grip tighten. His spirit is strong. The will that helped him through WW II and then raising us all is still there.

When they don't listen, just say "thanks"

On this Veteran's Day make sure you say "Thank you for your service" to any veteran or military person you see. I will be spending some time with two key veterans of 'the Greatest Generation" today; my father-in-law and my father.

Joe Proulx is a great example of the "Can Do" spirit that the Seabees where he served reinforced. He knows parts and logistics. He'll tinker with something broken, pulling it apart and putting it back together with parts from something else so that it works. He is having a hard time these days with Parkinson's developing and taking over his life. Parkinsons's in not something he is prepared to deal with. He can't take it apart and put it back together. When he does starting taking something apart, he doesn't remember doing it.

He will fall. Out of control, he just will lose balance and fall. This can be real dangerous when navigating the stairs in his house. He has already had several incidents with emergency room visits, stitches and bruises. He fell this past Sunday. Coming up from the basement, his shop where he does all his tinkering, he fell backwards. The family is still not sure how far he fell but he fell. Broke his neck this time. Second vertebrae so he was lucky. If it had been the first vertebrae, the situation could have been far worse.

Jerry Sherlock, my father, you may already know some of his story. We have been recording parts of the story of his life. We started with his first memory about three years old and worked our way up through school, baseball and World War II. He served in the Marines, in the Pacific Theater. He fought on Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He came home, started working, married Rita, raised six kids and did what he needed to do. We did not hear of what he did in the war. I do not know that we will ever hear all that occurred on those islands. I know enough that war is cruel, and horrible, and the worst that can be.

Jerry is challenged these days by diabetes, poor hearing, and recently has become legally blind. He keeps his routine as much as possible. He likes to read so his paperback and hardcover books from the library have been replaced by talking books. His newspaper has been replaced by a radio broadcast service that read the paper to him. Yet, when he gets up in the morning, he still walks out to the driveway to get the paper. A paper he really can't read.

The habits and routines that helped both Joe and Jerry survive are now creating some of their tough times. As much as we try to help them, they are set in their ways and won't listen. They made it before, they intend to make it now.

This Veterans Day is a great opportunity to just step back and say "Thanks for your service!"

Ann (Devine) Sherlock

(DEVINE), age 79, of Warwick, died suddenly on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of the late Paul V. Sherlock. Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Joseph P. and A. Viola (Warnock) Devine, she lived in Warwick for over 50 years. She was a 1949 graduate of St. Xavier Academy in Providence, and a 1953 graduate of Rhode Island College of Education. Mrs. Sherlock taught second grade in Warwick for a few years before retiring to raise her family.

She is survived by four children, Kathleen Sherlock MacLean and her husband Douglas of Foster, Timothy P. Sherlock and his friend Marian Maloney of Warwick, Martin D. Sherlock and his wife Jodi of Foster, and Mary E. Sherlock of Providence; six grandchildren, Cameron Simpson, Patrick and Elizabeth Sherlock, and Malcolm, Duncan, and Graham MacLean; several in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews including one favorite niece. She was the mother of the late Patrick J. Sherlock, and the sister of the late Eileen Pryor, Clare McElroy, and Joseph Devine.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 26, from 4-7 p.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited, and are also welcome at a luncheon to be held on Wednesday, October 27, at 12 noon at Mrs. Sherlock's home. Her burial will be private.

At Chelo's in Warwick, a frequent location for the periodic Sherlock Brunch, Ann was delighted by the size of her dessert!

For at least one family gathering, the men sat around the kitchen table. In order left to right are Henry, Paul, Ted,  Paul Brousseau (married to Angela), Vin Campbell (married to Fran), Dad Sherlock, and Jerry.

Maybe later the same day, this time along a couch: Dad Sherlock, Paul B, Paul, and Ted

How is it the same day? Dad Sherlock has the same time, Paul has the same suit/tie combo. Paul B took off his tie, and so has Ted. Both were known to like to relax that way.

How close alike did the Sherlock men look? Close enough that Jerry had identified the man in the center of this photo as himself. Yet, upon further review, other family members are agreeing it is Jerry's brother Paul posing with their father and mother.

Clues to how this was really determined? The uniform cap was Army not Marine. Paul was in the Army, Jerry in the Marines.

The building behind is apparently named the Fort Devens Elementary School. Family members agree that Mr and Mrs Sherlock did visit Paul up at Fort Devens before he was sent overseas to Paris.
